Playing with Heart: Kalsel Regional Secretary Displays True Fighting Spirit at FORNAS VIII

The 8th National Recreational Sports Festival (FORNAS VIII) held in West Nusa Tenggara (NTB) was not only a vibrant sports competition, but also a stage for inspiring stories of passion and perseverance.

One standout figure from the South Kalimantan (Kalsel) contingent was the Provincial Regional Secretary, M. Syarifuddin. Taking part directly as an athlete in the veteran tennis category, Syarifuddin demonstrated impressive dedication and fighting spirit.

Teaming up with his partner, Krisna, in the 115+ age category, Syarifuddin faced a tough challenge when they trailed 0–5 against the host team from NTB.

However, thanks to their composed play and unrelenting determination, they managed to claw their way back into the match, leveling the score at 5–5.

“We didn’t expect to catch up like that after trailing so far behind. But because we played freely and without pressure, we were able to equalize the score,” said Syarifuddin after the match on Sunday (July 27, 2025).

Unfortunately, during the decisive tie-break, luck was not on their side, and the match ended with a 2–1 victory for NTB.

Despite the result, Syarifuddin expressed his pride and joy at being able to perform at his best while representing his province on the national stage.

“Win or lose, we’re all happy. What matters is that we gave it our all, with spirit and unity,” he added enthusiastically.

His habit of playing tennis regularly amidst his busy schedule as a government official also drew attention. He noted that tennis helps him stay fit and maintain a balanced lifestyle.

“If there are no official activities on Saturdays or Sundays, I usually make time to play tennis. My official residence is close to the court, so that helps,” he said with a smile.

Regarding the weather in Lombok, which is similar to South Kalimantan, Syarifuddin admitted he felt comfortable.

“The heat is pretty much the same, but because this is a national event, the atmosphere is different. There’s a strong spirit of representing our region that drives us to give our best,” he added.

His active participation on the field is a testament to the South Kalimantan Provincial Government’s commitment to supporting and engaging in the world of recreational sports.

Syarifuddin emphasized that participating in FORNAS is not just about the final outcome, but about pride, unity, and the spirit of elevating the name of Banua (South Kalimantan’s homeland).

“Competing at FORNAS is not only about winning. It’s about pride, togetherness, and the spirit of raising Banua’s name,” he concluded with passion.

The spirit shown by M. Syarifuddin and his team is expected to inspire more people to become active in sports and contribute positively to their region. *As
